An organized extracellular layer surrounding some bacterial cells.
A capsule is a polysaccharide or polypeptide layer that surrounds certain bacteria. It can protect cells from desiccation, phagocytosis, and immune recognition, thereby increasing virulence. Capsules are also used in bacterial typing, vaccine development, and studies of biofilm formation.
