A lipid membrane surrounding some viruses.

A viral envelope is usually derived from host cell membranes during viral budding and contains viral glycoproteins required for attachment and entry. Enveloped viruses are often sensitive to detergents, drying, and heat. The envelope is important in host specificity, immune evasion, and vaccine antigen design.
