An acellular infectious agent that replicates only inside host cells.
Viruses consist of genetic material enclosed in a protein capsid and sometimes a lipid envelope. They lack independent metabolism and depend on host cells for replication. Viruses are major causes of disease, but they are also useful tools for gene delivery, vaccine development, molecular biology, and phage therapy research.
