A microorganism requiring lower oxygen levels than atmospheric oxygen.

Microaerophiles need oxygen for growth but are inhibited by normal atmospheric concentrations. They often require specialized incubation conditions with reduced oxygen and increased carbon dioxide. Examples include Campylobacter species, which are important in foodborne infection.
