Facultative anaerobes use aerobic respiration when oxygen is available and switch to fermentation or anaerobic respiration when oxygen is absent. This flexibility supports survival in changing environments. Many clinically important bacteria, including Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, are facultative anaerobes.
