A single-celled prokaryotic microorganism lacking a membrane-bound nucleus.

Bacteria are prokaryotic cells with genetic material located in a nucleoid rather than a true nucleus. They vary widely in shape, metabolism, habitat, and clinical importance. Some bacteria cause infectious disease, while many are beneficial in digestion, bioremediation, fermentation, enzyme production, and recombinant DNA technology.
