A phage genome integrated into or maintained within a bacterial host.
A prophage is the dormant genetic form of a temperate bacteriophage in a lysogenic bacterium. It replicates with the host genome and may remain silent for many generations. Environmental stress can induce prophage activation, leading to phage production and bacterial lysis.
