A microbe that causes disease mainly when host defenses are weakened.
Opportunistic pathogens may normally live harmlessly on skin, mucosa, or in the environment. They can cause infection when barriers are disrupted, immunity is reduced, or medical devices are present. Examples include Candida albicans, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus epidermidis.
