A polymer forming the structural framework of bacterial cell walls.
Peptidoglycan consists of glycan chains cross-linked by short peptides. It gives bacterial cells mechanical strength and protects against osmotic lysis. Because humans lack peptidoglycan, its biosynthesis is a major target of antibiotics such as beta-lactams and glycopeptides.
