Endotoxin usually refers to lipid A within lipopolysaccharide. It is released during bacterial growth or cell lysis and can stimulate cytokine production, fever, inflammation, and septic shock. Endotoxin detection is important in injectable drugs, medical devices, microbiological safety, and clinical microbiology.
