Exotoxins are proteins released by bacteria and some other microorganisms. They may disrupt cell signaling, inhibit protein synthesis, damage membranes, or interfere with neurotransmission. Because exotoxins are often highly specific and potent, they are important in pathogenesis, vaccine development, and toxin detection.
