A spectrophotometric measure used to estimate microbial growth.
Optical density measures light scattering by cells suspended in liquid culture. OD600 is commonly used for bacteria and yeasts to monitor growth, although it does not distinguish live from dead cells. Calibration is needed to relate optical density to cell number or biomass.
