A structured microbial community attached to a surface within an extracellular matrix.
Biofilms consist of microbial cells embedded in a self-produced matrix of polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, and extracellular DNA. They protect microorganisms from antibiotics, disinfectants, and immune responses. Biofilms are important in chronic infections, medical devices, dental plaque, water systems, and industrial biofouling.
