Pili are protein filaments on bacterial surfaces. Some pili mediate adhesion to host tissues or abiotic surfaces, while sex pili enable conjugative DNA transfer between cells. Pili are important in virulence, biofilm development, horizontal gene transfer, and bacterial classification.
