Short bacterial appendages mainly used for adhesion.
Fimbriae are numerous, short, hair-like structures that help bacteria attach to host cells, tissues, or surfaces. They contribute to colonization, biofilm formation, and pathogenicity. Because adhesion is often an early step in infection, fimbriae are studied as potential vaccine and anti-adhesion targets.
