A major outer membrane component of Gram-negative bacteria.
Lipopolysaccharide, often abbreviated LPS, consists of lipid A, core polysaccharide, and O antigen. Lipid A can trigger strong inflammatory responses and is known as endotoxin. LPS is important in bacterial classification, immune recognition, septic shock, and vaccine or diagnostic research.
