Reduced product of pyruvate formed during anaerobic metabolism.
Lactate is produced when NADH reduces pyruvate, regenerating NAD+ for glycolysis. It accumulates during intense exercise or hypoxia. Lactate can be transported to the liver for conversion back to glucose.
