Pathway that generates NADPH and ribose-5-phosphate.
The pentose phosphate pathway branches from glucose-6-phosphate metabolism. It provides reducing power for biosynthesis and antioxidant defense through NADPH. It also supplies ribose sugars for nucleotide synthesis.
