Sterol lipid important in membranes and steroid biosynthesis.
Cholesterol modulates membrane fluidity and serves as a precursor for steroid hormones, bile acids, and vitamin D. It is synthesized mainly in the liver and obtained from diet. Its transport depends on lipoproteins.
