Pathway that degrades fatty acids to acetyl-CoA.
Beta oxidation occurs mainly in mitochondria and generates acetyl-CoA, NADH, and FADH2. These products feed into the citric acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation. The pathway is important during fasting and prolonged exercise.
